Grab a promotion! Just do this….

Face it; you are not only doing your job for the fun of it. Jobs are not only about paychecks, but about rewards and recognitions also. You need motivation to take you through those 8hours every day. A promotion may be just the tonic you need to add that zing to your working hours. All set? Just do these simple things and land that plum post you’ve been eyeing!

Modify your priorities- you boss has his own goals and a way in which he feels he can attain them (however idiotic you may feel it is!). Keep these goals in mind throughout the day and try to modify your goals according to them. Don’t argue with these. Remember the 2 rules-(1) the boss is always right. (2) If the boss is wrong, go to rule no. 1. If your boss feels that both of you are working for the same thing, you may increase your chances of a promotion.

Know what matters- your company assesses you on certain behaviors and attributes. Obviously, you need to stress on these if you want to rise. You can even ask your boss on the areas you need to brush up on.

Keep your word- it is always better to under promise and then over deliver. If you are assigned a work, see that you do it better than expected. This is very important if you want to be noticed by the management.

Positivity is the key- negative people are not nice to be with. Try to be cheerful at work and avoid negative vibes wherever possible. Avoid criticizing your boss with your colleagues. Remember, it will not get you a cushy office with a view!

Don’t scrimp on praise – this is in line with keeping priorities right. Praise your boss when needed, especially if he is due for a promotion himself. Not only does it show that you are a team player, but it may open up more avenues for you if he does get promoted.

Made a mistake? Admit it-nobody’s perfect. If you admit your mistakes when you commit them, it means that you can see your flaws. It also shows that you can learn from your mistakes and this is important if you are to handle greater responsibilities.

Take responsibility-nobody likes nags who keep questioning and cannot do anything themselves. You boss will not welcome constant mails from you on every itsy bitsy detail and concern you might have. Go to your boss only when you have researched the problem and have a serious question. Show him that you have done your homework.

Keep personal stuff personal- don’t indulge in gossip. Also, keep intimate details about your life out of the office. Your colleagues may not be as interested as you think and it might hamper your work.
